Last month, Voyage Houston featured an in-depth interview with Doug Long, President and Owner of Power Vac America, highlighting his journey, values, and the legacy he continues to build through principled leadership and hard work.
Doug’s path to business ownership wasn’t a straight line — but entrepreneurship was always part of it. For more than 30 years, he worked as an independent contractor and business owner within the computer and software engineering space, primarily serving Houston’s oil and gas industry. Even earlier, as a paperboy, Doug operated as a small business owner — responsible for purchasing supplies, managing accounts, and collecting directly from customers. That mindset made his decision in 2003 to invest in Power Vac America less of a pivot and more of a continuation: applying experience, discipline, and vision to a business with long-term potential.
When Doug acquired Power Vac America, the company’s work was primarily residential. Over time, he strategically shifted its focus toward commercial and industrial services — a transformation that now defines the business. Today, approximately 85% of Power Vac America’s work serves commercial and industrial clients, reflecting both market demand and Doug’s commitment to specialized expertise.
Values That Shape Leadership
Throughout the interview, Doug emphasized the values that guide his approach to both life and business.
Honesty and integrity stand at the core of his leadership philosophy — principles instilled by his parents, who grew up during the Great Depression. Those early lessons shaped his belief that trust, accountability, and ethical behavior are non-negotiable in building something that lasts.
Doug’s work ethic also traces back to his youth. One of his earliest jobs was as a paperboy at age 12, where he expanded his route from 60 customers to 350. That experience taught him responsibility, customer service, and the importance of earning trust — lessons that continue to influence how Power Vac America operates today.
Building a Company with Purpose
Asked what people closest to him would say defines him, Doug answered simply: honesty. That quality is reflected in how he leads, how he treats customers, and how the company delivers its services.
Even when discussing the idea of slowing down, Doug joked that stopping work would only shorten his time — because he genuinely loves what he does. That passion continues to drive the company forward.
As Doug shared in the interview:
“Power Vac America provides the highest-quality air duct cleaning service in the most honest and professional manner.”
That statement captures the mission behind the work — from commercial and industrial HVAC systems to healthcare, marine, and residential environments.
