Recently, there has been widespread discussion regarding the white paper titled “Effects of Negative Air Duct Cleaning on Flex Ducts,” released in December. This paper has sparked confusion and concern among individuals wondering if NADCA supports its claims. NADCA, however, asserts that they had no involvement in the development or review of this document and do not endorse the statement that negative air should not be used to clean flex ducts due to potential damage. They maintain that this assertion is inaccurate.
NADCA emphasizes that the cleaning approach for flex ductwork, like all duct systems, should be determined through a thorough assessment and evaluation. According to ACR, The NADCA Standard, Section 1.10, System Components Assessment, the condition of the HVAC system components must be evaluated during inspection, including determining the need for cleaning, defining the scope of work, recommending techniques, and assessing any unique requirements. Hence, the technician must assess whether cleaning or replacement is appropriate.
While some NADCA members have addressed concerns raised by the white paper, asserting that duct cleaning processes rarely cause damage to flex ductwork, it is acknowledged that the negative air used during cleaning might exceed the flex duct’s capacity in some cases. However, most flex ducts are designed with a metal spiral support to endure contact vacuuming and other cleaning methods.
Power Vac America’s Position on Flex Duct Cleaning
At Power Vac America, we clean extensive lengths of flex duct annually (miles of it!). Adhering to NADCA standards, upon arrival for the job, we conduct inspections. If the flex duct is deemed too old, brittle, or moldy, we will decline cleaning it and recommend replacement. Power Vac America does not replace flex duct.
