Later this month, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) will hold a press conference to discuss its 2024 Hurricane Season predictions. The season officially begins on June 1, 2024, and ends on November 30, 2024. Since Hurricane Season takes up half the year in Houston, we decide to a share monthly article to the topic, that will be useful to lifelong Houstonians and newcomers alike.

Hurricanes are formidable forces of nature, capable of causing widespread devastation and posing significant risks to life and property. Understanding the hazards associated with tropical cyclones—such as storm surge flooding, inland flooding, destructive winds, tornadoes, and high surf—is crucial for staying safe during hurricane season. Here’s what the National Weather Service has to say about them.

Know the Risks:

  • On average, 12 tropical storms and 6 hurricanes form over the Atlantic, Caribbean, and Gulf of Mexico each hurricane season, spanning from June 1 to November 30.
  • Guam, the Northern Marianas, and Micronesia face typhoons year-round, with a peak season from July through November.
  • Over a typical 2-year period, the U.S. coastline is hit by an average of 3 hurricanes, 1 of which is classified as a major hurricane.

Understanding Hurricane Hazards:

  • Storm surge, driven by a hurricane’s winds, is a leading cause of hurricane-related fatalities in the U.S., often causing widespread destruction along coastlines.
  • Inland flooding from heavy rains can result in extensive flooding hundreds of miles from the coast, persisting for days after a storm has passed.
  • Hurricane-force winds can destroy buildings and propel debris, posing serious risks to communities in the storm’s path.
  • Tornadoes spawned by hurricanes can occur far from the storm’s center, adding to the threat.
  • Dangerous waves and rip currents generated by a hurricane’s winds can pose hazards to coastal residents and mariners alike.

By understanding the risks associated with hurricanes and taking appropriate actions before, during, and after a storm, you can increase your chances of survival. Stay informed, heed evacuation orders, and have a plan in place to protect yourself and your loved ones during hurricane season. Your preparedness could make all the difference in staying safe when faced with nature’s fury.
